The following four-step process can help us to transition to a more just and sustainable world:

  1. Create awareness among the masses: The majority of people are unaware of the employment of economic slave labor and the atrocious environmental destruction that takes place in the process of producing the next consumer gadget or seeking to reduce product prices even more. Those that are aware of it feel trapped in a system they feel uncomfortable with and justify their actions with the thought that if they don’t do it, somebody else will. Awareness is created by thousands of NGO’s (non-Government Organizations), activists, awakened individuals and independent media. It is important this process keeps gaining momentum and at some point will infect the mainstream media in order to reach the broad public. Ultimately I don’t believe that the majority of people purposely want to exploit other human beings, employ child labor or destroy the Earth just to maintain their comfort and lifestyle.

  2. Become an activist and live the vision: Currently Earth, our ship, is sinking. If we want a chance to fix it properly, we will have to keep bailing water until such time as we can plug the holes in it. Luckily there is a fast-growing army of environmental and human rights activists that deals with immediate issues at hand. Join them and let’s save whatever we can now and increase the chances of a decent life for our future generations.

  3. Integrate ethics into business: Business and free entrepreneurial enterprise has proven to be a very effective way to unleash human ingenuity and efficiency. Trying to slow down or stop that vehicle for human progress is like trying to stop water from flowing to the sea. It would also be throwing out the baby with the bathwater. What we need to do is change the paradigm of thinking and expand the perspective of measuring success based on power and money to a more all-inclusive platform of value creation for the benefit of all society and the planet. We therefore need to integrate our values and ethics into our day-to-day business activities and practice business with a conscience, which will lead to environmental and socially responsible work practices.

  4. Push for legislative corporate reforms: A lot of the problems that are currently created by globalization are due to a defect in the accounting practices and legal structure of the corporation itself (as discussed in In the Eyes of Anahita. For more detail on this topic read The Corporation by Joel Bakan). Legislative changes in structure and accounting regulations are required to allow corporations to focus on holistic value creation and prevent them from offloading externalities (the social, health and environmental cost that are related to a company’s business activity but which are not reflected in its books but are left for society to deal with) on governments and taxpayers around the globe. This requires active pressure on politicians around the world.
